Summer, 1936 Gone with the Wind, Margaret Mitchell's first novel, takes the world by storm. Everyone in Hollywood knows Civil War pictures don't make a dime, but renegade producer David O. Selznick snaps up the movie rights and suddenly America has just one question Who will play Scarlett O'Hara?
When Gwendolyn Brick gets her hands on the book, the clouds part and the angels sing the Hallelujah Chorus. Only a real Southern belle can play Scarlett - and didn't her mama raise her on stories of Sherman's march and those damned Yankees? She's going to have to stand out bigger than a hoop skirt at a Twelve Oaks barbeque to win that role.
Marcus Adler is the golden boy of Cosmopolitan Pictures, the studio William Randolph Hearst started for his mistress, Marion Davies. When Marcus' screenplay becomes Davies' first hit, he's invited to Hearst Castle for the weekend. The kid who was kicked out of Pennsylvania gets to rub shoulders with Myrna Loy, Winston Churchill, and Katharine Hepburn - but when the trip turns fiasco, he starts sinking fast. He needs a new story, real big and real soon.
When Selznick asks George Cukor to direct Gone with the Wind, it's the scoop of the year for Kathryn Massey, the Hollywood Reporter's newest columnist. But dare she publish it?
The Trouble with Scarlett is the second in Martin Turnbull's series of historical novels set during Hollywood's golden age.

This is only 1 of maybe 5 series of author’s books that I’ve purchased over the years. I was immersed completely with the storyline of all the past celebrities anyone over 55 can remember (Gable, Marilyn, Bette, Bogie ALL of them). The first book (The Garden on Sunset) was all it took for me to buy them all. If you like the Golden Era of Hollywood, 1927 - 1959, you will not be disappointed. Although not necessarily a biography, it is a deeper look of ALL these celebrities behind scenes personalities and scandals. The main characters are 3 young people that move to Hollywood to become famous and end up renting an apartment in the Famous Allah Hotel (a real hotel and celebrity hangout) and what happens to them, the parties, the struggle to “make it” in such a wild time with wild people. Meticulously researched. I could not recommend it more highly. I wish I could give it 10 stars!!!Product details

The Trouble with Scarlett Garden of Allah Book 2 (Audible Audio Edition) Martin Turnbull John C Zak Books Reviews
To be honest with you, Gone With the Wind is a film I have little fondness for. I appreciate its historical significance in the history of film and the overall significance of the original novel it was based on, but there are so many other films that I gravitate more toward. That being said I am huge fan of the "The Trouble With Scarlett" by Martin Turnbull that uses the pre-production and casting of GWTW as a jumping off point for his three fictional characters in his Garden of Alllah series. This book is the second in the series, and in my opinion better than the first novel which I also enjoyed. The three main characters Marcus, Kathryn, and Gwendolyn are much more developed in this second book and have grown from their experiences in the first. Once again Martin shows his command of knowledge for Hollywood of this era by putting the reader in these authentic locations that the characters inhabit. Once again many famous faces from the era pop up here and there as our three characters stumble their way in attempting to conquer the movie industry in their own way. The strength of this second book over the first is now that we have gotten to know these characters better they inhabit this world more comfortably and freely than in the first novel. This allows the historical figures to be woven in more seamlessly and adds to the atmosphere of the period.
By using the GWTW excitement that was going on during the year in the book, Martin provoked me to learn more about the production of the film. 1939 was a seminal year in Hollywood as many great films were released that year. This book's setting covers the pre-production of some of these films. If you are a big fan of GWTW you will want to read this book, but you will want to read "The Garden on Sunset" first. Overall, Martin has improved on the first novel and created interest in finding out what his characters will get into next. Highly recommended!
I had read book 1 last year and then due to having a stack of books didn't get back to the series but when
I saw a sale for the books I had to get them ALL.
We pick up with Kathryn, Gwendolyn, and Marcus in the late '30s and boy is it a fun read. As a fan of old movies and the lore around that time (and GWTW on particular) you get to see what a big deal it was and even though we all know Vivien Leigh gets cast the road Gwendolyn's story takes is fun. As for Marcus and Kathryn they're just as enjoyable as we see them interact with the likes of Louella Parsons and F. Scott FitzGerald.
Overall you'll learn stuff while still having fun with our fictional protagonists and their interactions with real people.
"The Trouble with Scarlett" takes place during the Great Depression with all the hoopla around David Selznick's challenges in bringing "Gone With The Wind" and further follows the adventures, trials, and tribulations of Marcus Adler, now a struggling screenwriter, Gwendolyn Brick, struggling to become a screen actress, and Kathryn Massey, trying to break into newsprint. I found myself rooting for their respective success. Martin Turnbull does an excellent job of fleshing out the novel with well=known characters like Alla Nazimova, Greta Garbo, Louella Parsons, Louis B Mayer, Joan Crawford, Ramon Novarro, and others. I found myself laughing out loud at many of Turnbull's descriptons of what the trio go through in their separate quests to fulfill their dreams,. One priceless description was of a dinner party at San Simeon Castle. I can't wait to read the rest of the series - I am seriously hooked!
