This is the second book in the Black Jewels series. It covers about eight hears of Jaenelle Angelline's life as she goes from a raped and traumatized twelve-year-old to a twenty year old high Queen. It also continues the story of two of the men who will be important to her: Daemon Sadi who is lost with a fragmented mind and Lucivar Yaslana who is an Eyrien Warlord Prince imprisoned in a salt mine.Jaenelle is under the guardianship of Saetan who is the High Lord of Hell. He petitioned the Council for that right but now has to deal with a Dark Council that is being subtly manipulated by an old enemy of his who will do anything to bring him down and gain control of Jaenelle.
Meanwhile, Jaenelle is healing and learning and gathering her friends together. She is also driving Saetan crazy with her enthusiastic actions. Whatever she does though is done from a kind heart and a desire to do well by her people. She doesn't want to form her own court which is the fate of most young Queens once they embrace their jewels. She doesn't want control over other people's lives.
Jaenelle is a very, very powerful witch, black widow, and queen who controls the most powerful black jewels. She does things no other witches or magic users know how to do. However, she has trouble with the basic things that most young magic users learn to do first.
I loved watching Jaenelle grow into herself and her powers. I loved her relationship with her guardian Saetan. This is a well-crafted world filled with interesting creatures.

Heir to the Shadows continues the Black Jewels story. Daemon spends the next years wandering through Terreille, barely knowing who he is and thinking he has killed Jaenelle. Surreal attempts to help him when he wanders back into her life from time to time. Jaenelle is in the care of the High Lord of Hell, in a comatose state. The corrupt forces in Terreille are still seeking to finish their subjugation of Terreille, and to invade Kaeleer as well. They have already started there is a territory named Little Terreille which provides a toehold into Kaeleer. Through this territory, Dorothea and Hekatah are seeking to spread their perversion of what it means to be Blood.
The High Lord and his friends and family are trying to stop them. They need Witch. But until Jaenelle wakes up and shoulders her responsibilities, they won't be successful. After two years, Jaenelle finally leaves the abyss where her Self has been recovering from the rape and adopts the High Lord of Hell, Saetan SaDiablo, as her father. She also adopts his friends and family as uncles and brothers.
Saetan, a Black-Jeweled Warlord Prince and one of the only two Black Widows who are men, had hidden the seriousness of Jaenelle's condition from everyone; therefore her friends start to feel alienated. One of her friends sends a message to the High Lord demanding and explanation why Jaenelle hasn't been in contact. So Saetan issues invitations to Jaenelle's friends to come visit the Hall. And the Hall is invaded by high caste and high rank (both Jewel rank and social rank) teen-agers who come from all over Kaeleer, and they don't leave (except for short visits to their homes) for five years. He teaches the girls how to be strong but not overbearing Queens; and he teaches boys to support and protect the Queens-to-be, without being subservient. Unlike Terreille which has subverted the rules, Kaeleer men know that the first rule is not Obedience, but Service and Protection.
And Jaenelle's Kindred (the Blood who come from animal races) friends start appearing, too.
Lucivar Yaslana was given evidence that his half-brother, Daemon Sadi, had killed Jaenelle. When Daemon, who is on the edge of madness, came to him to ask for help with a mutual escape, Lucivar rejected the help and accused him of killing Witch. Denying this, yet half-believing it because of the madness, Sadi runs off. Lucivar decides that it's time to escape his captivity in Terreille. He is Eyrien, a winged race and one of the three long-lived races. After a few years of feigned submission, he escapes and flies to the mountains, seeking a way out. He wants to get vengeance from Daemon for Jaenelle's death. But his wings were been damaged in his captivity and his pursuers wound him. He keeps himself aloft mostly through will-power and Craft, the magic of the Blood. Evading his pursuers, and on the edge of death, he flies through a tunnel to what he thought was death.
This is a story of lost childhood friends finding each other and learning what it means to be responsible leaders of Blood society; a story of Blood and Kindred learning to trust each other through their love of Witch; and this is the story of Witch, who is dreams made flesh.
And not all the dreamers were human.
My rating PG-17, almost R
My score 5 out of 5 stars
The first book was a little rough, but this one started to take off and I was hopelessly addicted to this series, and then everything else Anne Bishop ever wrote. I burned through several of her other series as well. She writes really good characters, knows how to use sex and violence in the service of the story, and--this is childishly comforting, but I need it the way the world is these days--the bad guys are generally stupid and get what they deserve in a blast of righteous vengeance. Sometimes they get shut down even before they do the bad thing they have been planning. I need a little simple justice these days.
Jaenelle is healed in body, but her spirit is still damaged. Lucivar is still imprisoned in the salt mines and Daemon walks in the Twisted Kingdom. The second book in the Black Jewels series is just as good as the first and a great continuation of the story.
I read this when it first came out and I've reread it many times. Each time I find more to ponder the role of women and men in a society, the responsibility of our leaders to the land, and the raising of teenagers are all interwoven into the story. This one isn't quite as dark as the first book but has its moments.
The world of the Black Jewels is complex. I find it amazing that Ms. Bishop tracks it all so well. I'm also reminded in this reread of characters that are echoed in her latest series of The Others (just as good a series).
I put in Explicit Sexual Content not because there are sex scenes but because there are some really touchy sex-related subjects in these books. Be aware--these are NOT erotica or even romantica. Incredibly well-written, but touching on child abuse, rape, slavery, and a WHOLE slew of other landmines.
And because I am me, the editing is pretty awesome. If you look hard enough, you can always find mistakes as everyone involved in a book is human, but these were minor and rarely if ever knocked me out of the story enough to notice them.
